How to Negotiate a Higher Salary — Scripts & Strategies

Step-by-step salary negotiation guide with real scripts. What to say, when to say it, and how to calculate your target number.

Jordan graduated into a tight job market and spent five months sending applications into what felt like a void. So when a mid-size consulting firm offered $62,000 for an analyst role, Jordan said yes the same day. Not because $62,000 was amazing. The posting listed a range of $58,000 to $75,000, but because the relief of finally having an offer drowned out everything else.

Jordan didn't negotiate. Not even a little. The fear was specific and paralyzing: what if they think I'm ungrateful? What if they pull the offer?

Seven years later, Jordan's salary was $78,000. Good progression, solid raises. But one night, Jordan read about how initial salary negotiations compound over a career. If they'd negotiated to $67,000 (still well within the posted range) and received the same percentage raises, they'd be earning $83,500 now. The cumulative difference was more than $30,000 in lost income.

Script 1: Responding to an Initial Offer

"Thank you so much for this offer. I'm genuinely excited about the role and the team. Based on my research into comparable positions and the experience I'd be bringing, I was hoping we could discuss a salary closer to $68,000. Is there flexibility to move in that direction?"

Script 2: Asking Your Current Employer

"I've really valued my time here over the past two years, and I've taken on the Wellbridge account, led the CRM migration, and brought in two new clients. I've done some market research, and I'd like to discuss adjusting my compensation to reflect that growth."

Script 3: When They Say No

"I understand the budget constraints. Would you be open to revisiting this in six months? In the meantime, are there other parts of the package we could discuss, like additional PTO, a signing bonus, or a professional development budget?"

The thing nobody tells you about negotiation: the discomfort lasts five minutes. The money lasts your whole career.
